As the summer heat fades, the province changes pace. Alicante in autumn brings milder walking weather, quieter villages and a Mediterranean landscape of evergreen pines, pockets of deciduous woodland, bird-rich wetlands and mountain valleys.

Autumn colour does not arrive everywhere at once. It is usually most visible inland and at higher elevations, and its timing depends on each year’s rain and temperatures. These ten ideas work particularly well from October to late November.

1. See autumn colour in Font Roja

Carrascal de la Font Roja Natural Park, near Alcoy, is Alicante’s classic autumn destination. Altitude, shade and moisture allow maples, ashes and Valencian oaks to add yellow, ochre and red to the holm-oak forest. Trails starting near the sanctuary and visitor centre suit different amounts of time.

Check park notices and access conditions before travelling. Special traffic arrangements may apply on busy weekends.

2. Follow aromatic trails in Serra de Mariola

Neighbouring Serra de Mariola is ideal for a relaxed mountain day. Paths cross pinewoods, springs and slopes scented with rosemary, sage and other herbs. Bocairent, Banyeres de Mariola and Agres make good bases for combining nature, heritage and local food.

3. Explore the villages of Vall de Gallinera

Benialí, Benissivà, Benirrama and the valley’s other small settlements reward slow travel. Terraces, ravines and mountains reveal a rural side of Alicante far removed from the coast. Pair a short walk with a traditional inland lunch.

4. Look across the Guadalest valley and reservoir

El Castell de Guadalest remains one of the province’s finest viewpoints, but feels much calmer outside summer. After visiting the old village, follow the easy tracks around the reservoir and enjoy views towards Aitana, checking current trail conditions first.

5. Go birdwatching at El Hondo

Autumn brings migrating and wintering birds to southern Alicante’s wetlands. Boardwalks and hides at El Hondo Natural Park offer chances to see ducks, herons and other species without disturbing them. Some entrances and routes have specific opening or booking arrangements, so confirm before visiting.

6. Walk beside the La Mata and Torrevieja lagoons

The salt lagoons show another side of Alicante. La Mata’s paths are well suited to easy walking or cycling, especially early or late in the day. Stay out of restricted zones and watch wildlife from a respectful distance.

7. Hike Serra Gelada without the summer heat

Between Benidorm, l’Alfàs del Pi and Altea, Serra Gelada offers dramatic cliffs and wide Mediterranean views. Autumn is usually more comfortable, although the high-level traverse remains demanding and exposed. For an easier option, choose the scenic Albir Lighthouse walk.

8. Mix coast and nature in Alicante city

You need not travel far from the city. The Vía Verde de la Cantera runs for roughly 1.2 kilometres beside the sea, linking coastal scenery with railway heritage. Combine it with Almadraba Park or a late-afternoon climb up Mount Benacantil.

9. Taste the inland cuisine

Look for mountain rice dishes, olleta alcoyana, pericana, local cured meats and almond pastries. Alcoy, Cocentaina and the central mountain villages can turn a nature trip into a full day while supporting local businesses.

10. Add an autumn adventure

Cooler weather also improves conditions for rock activities. The family via ferrata in Callosa de Segura is a guided, accessible way to add an active experience in the south of the province.

Practical autumn tips

  • Check forecasts and alerts: intense rain can quickly affect ravines, tracks and access roads.
  • Pack layers: the coast may feel warm while Font Roja, Mariola or Aitana can be much cooler.
  • Wear grippy footwear: leaves, damp ground and polished rock can be slippery.
  • Protect natural areas: follow signs and do not collect plants or mushrooms where it is prohibited.
  • Allow for shorter days: start walks with enough time to finish before dark.

When is autumn colour at its best?

There is no guaranteed date. Higher areas can begin changing in October, with the strongest colour often appearing during November. Each season’s weather can bring it forward, delay it or shorten it.
